For my Irish Film and Genre module (FX2010) as part of my Film and Screen Media course at University College Cork I was tasked with writing a two page screenplay based on the still image below from The French Connection (1971).

In doing so I was tasked to complete the script with regards to the following brief: “Study the film still: the characters present, their costumes, facial expressions, and body language; the location; the lighting. Based on all of the visual clues in the film still, decide on a genre. This can either be a straightforward reading or you can have a bit of fun with it (a gangster romcom, a Christmas thriller, whatever you want). You have total freedom with your screenplay; with the film still as a jumping off point, it can be anything you want it to be. The only requirement is that you state what genre or blend of genres it is, and stick to it, with all the generic flourishes you can muster!”
