UCC BA Showcase at the 2023 Fastnet Film Festival:
The premiere of I and my teams short film entitled An Unnerving Realisation.
26th May 2023
My journey with the Fastnet Film Festival commenced on the 24th of May this year, marking my first interaction with this remarkable event. Consequently, I was drawn to the festival due I and my team’s short film, An Unnerving Realisation, being selected and screened as part of the UCC BA Showcase presentation during the festival.

Having arrived in Schull completely unaware of what the presentation was going to include, I was excited to see that the presentation was an amalgamation of captivating short films, music videos, and insightful short documentaries. With each providing a fascinating and thought-provoking glimpse into the realms of fiction and reality as portrayed through the medium of film.
Moreover, my fellow students’ films delved into pressing and pertinent issues. These included the current housing crisis, and the hardships faced by immigrants working in the service sector here in Ireland. Their works shed light on these topical matters, and thus brought forth awareness of these issues and re-iterated their effect on Ireland’s population.

Furthermore, the showcases plethora of music videos all explored the theme of the fantastical, which was exemplified by a mesmerizing and gritty music video. In this particular piece, a trio of audacious individuals, donning crude masks depicting Donald Trump, Kim Jong Un and Vladimir Putin, raced through the nocturnal landscape of Cork City.
The music video projected itself as a captivating blend of fast-paced split-screen montages reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino’s signature style, coupled with an underground grittiness akin to the opening sequence of the 2011 film Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. Hence, this fusion of influences created a truly unique audio-visual experience.
In all the UCC BA Showcase, demonstrated how the combined effort of talented students alongside the backing of others allowed for a myriad of cultural products that reflect our society can be produced by those who contribute to and inhabit such civilisation.
